OMG’s Celebrity Stories That Shaped 2012

2012, another massive year for the entertainment industry in Nigeria. We are going to take a look at some of the major celebrity stories that made the headlines.



OCCUPY NIGERIA
On the 1st of January, the Federal Government the partial removal of subsidy petrol and a mass protest followed. What was really remarkable was the major roles celebrities like Banky W, Seun Kuti, Funmi Iyanda, Eedris Abdulkareem, Dede Mabiaku played in the movement by entertaining fans and raising awareness about the ills of the subsidy removal.

D’banj and Don Jazzy also the wrath of fans because they were not forthcoming during the protest. Many believed this was because of the role they played in the campaign of Goodluck Jonathan as the President of Nigeria just 6 months earlier.
This was also the situation of many Nollywood stars who had publicly supported the candidature of Jonathan.

DAVIDO’S INDESCRETIONS
David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, had a big 2012 after first springing into limelight in 2011 with his hit song “BACK WHEN” featuring Naeto C. 2012, was his breakout year as he gained worldwide recognition and released his debut album O.B.O. (Omo Baba Olowo) in an event that shook the whole entertainment industry. However, he was also grabbing the headlines for reasons other than music.

In February, Davido’s bedroom photos with Sonia Jumbo surfaced online and this caused a deep stir amongst fans. August brought fresh drama as Davido was alleged to have assaulted Femi Ajiobola, a cab driver, and a lady identified as Suzie at the lobby of an hotel in Lekki Phase 1. In December, another bedroom photo of Davido was leaked again. This time the identity of the girl or the location where the picture was taken could not be ascertained.

The fast rising star has courted controversy since he became popular and minor incidents of improper behaviour has landed him slaps firstly from the police and quite recently by the Elegushi monarch. It however remains to be seen whether all these is a media strategy from the Atlanta born singer or just a sign of youth.



D’BANJ and DON JAZZY
The dynamic duo of D’banj and Don Jazzy first announced their arrival on the Nigerian music scene with the release of D’banj hit single “Tongolo”. The pair were a marriage made in heaven; D’banj was the charismatic singer with a lot of fire while Don Jazzy was the electrifying producer with the midas touch. They were among the pioneers of Nigeria’s current Afrobeat/Hip-Hop Culture.

Their collaboration brought them a lot of success that led to the birth of their record label, Mo’Hits. Mo’Hits signed on other artistes like Wande Coal, Dr Sid, D Prince and K-switch who had varying degrees of success in the music industry.

It was however, a rude shock to everyone when the pair announced they were splitting up in March 2012 due to “creative and personal” differences. Artistes and fans were split into two camps with very few choosing to be on the fence. The two music minds who had worked tirelessly as a team for 8 years were now seen as competitors by fans and the media.


2FACE and ANNIE
2face has always been seen as Casanova after having 3 babies by 3 different ladies in the same year. Ever since there has been a lot of speculation as to who was going win his heart. 2face put all of that to bed when he proposed to Annie Macauley on February, 14 and the pair eventually got married later this year breaking the hearts of his other baby momma’s and other hopeful single women in the process.


TONTO THE POP STAR
Tonto Dikeh is arguably one of the most talked about Actresses in recent times. Nothing has gotten the people talking about more than her decision to kick-start a music career. She released two singles “Hi” and “It’s Ova” and both songs hit 3 million downloads within a week. On the flip side, many jokes surfaced on twitter about the songs afterwards but the actress cum singer claimed that she wasn’t deterred and she was going to record an album and release a video to the songs.

2012 was a big year for many celebrities, album releases, international collaborations, endorsement deals, awards and lots more. It’s also a big year for tabloids and fans who saw more than enough of the other side of being a celebrity.
