The Obafemi Awolowo University had been on strike for more than three weeks as regards the on going strike action by the protesting workers under the aegis of Senior Staff Association of Nigeria University, SSANU, and Non Academic Staff of University, NASU, with the former Vice Chancellor, Prof ‘Tale Omole.The workers accused Omole of imposition, with the emergence of Prof. Ayobami Salami as Omole’s successor.Meanwhile, the prolonged protest by the non academic staffers of the institution may have consumed its leadership as the national secretariat of the body announced dissolution of the executive council of the body for the institution.Before President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Senate of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State to immediately recommend a qualified person for appointment, as an acting Vice Chancellor for the university.
A new Vice Chancellor, albeit in acting capacity, has emerged for the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State. He is Professor Anthony Elujoba of the Faculty of Pharmacy.
His emergence comes barely 24 hours after the Federal Government ordered the Senate of the school to use its internal mechanism in selecting a new Vice Chancellor.
There has been series of protests against the former Vice Chancellor, Prof Bamitale Omole, who has been accused of mismanaging resources of the institution,who earlier contested for the position.
The Senate of the institution approved the appointment of Professor Anthony Elujoba as the acting VC.
Workers and students of the institution recently trooped out in jubilation following the dissolution of the school’s governing council and the suspension of the selection of the vice chancellor by the federal government.
According to the staff and students, the federal government’s decision was a step towards the redemption and integrity of the institution, which for weeks had been hit by crisis after the exit of the immediate past Vice Chancellor, Prof Bamitale Omole.The resumption date for student is yet to be determined.
