Rio Olympics Update: Dream Team VI Loses to Germany and other Results

Guess it wasn’t time

Nigeria’s Dream Team Vi lost by two goals to the German team. And did you say our best shot at winning gold?

The build-up to the semi-finals had the nation dreaming.

You see, we are a sentimental people.

Just don’t get us started . But you did.

Arriving a few hours to their first game, Dream Team Vi defeated Japan 5 – 4 in the opener. They went one nil over Sweden. Lost two nil to Colombia. And that was good enough to make it through the group stage.

Next was the quarter finals against Denmark. It ended two nil in Nigerian’s favour.

Then came the semi-finals, if things went our way “Reliving 96” or something close would be the title of this piece. But we went down two nil to Germany with each goal coming in each half, hence the subtitle.

While all this was on, there was the controversies off the field of play. But that has always been part of the bane of Nigerian sports.

Nigeria will face Honduras on Saturday for a place on the medals table- a bronze medal is better than none. Enough said.

In the women’s long jump event Nigeria had another shot at being on the medals table. Jumping 6.81 meters, Ese Brume came 5th as against American athlete, Tianna Bartoletta who jumped 7.17 meters to win gold. Close right?

I wish I could believe the sports minister’s statement that they’ve began preparation for 2020 Olympics.

Away from my scepticism though.

Here’s what to watch out for today at the Rio Olympics
