Eight facts you should know about King Sunny Ade


Sunday Adeniyi, better known as King Sunny Ade (KSA) clocked 70 on the 22nd of September.

While he became a musician against his parent’s wishes. He’s today, considered a legend in the music world.

Here are eight things you should know about him.

1. He’s the first African artist to have two nominations at the Grammys. The first for his 1983 album, Syncro System and later his 1988 album, Odu.

2. He’s a visiting professor of music at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife.

3. His music featured as soundtrack on various Holywood movies, including the 1983 film Breathless, starring Richard Gere.

4. In 2009, KSA was inducted into the Afropop Hall of Fame, at the Brooklyn African Festival.

5. Stevie Wonder played the harmonica in KSA’s song, Aura.

6. KSA introduced the pedal steel guitar to Nigerian music.

7. KSA was president of the Performing Musician Employers’ Association of Nigeria (PMAN) for four years, 1982-1986.

8. He’s said to be the pioneer of modern world music.
