Lent: Nigerians Should Turn From Their Godless Ways – Catholic Bishop, Okeoghene

The Catholic Bishop of Warri Diocese, Most (Rev.) Dr. Okeoghene John Afareha on Wednesday described Nigeria as a Godless country, Daily Post reports.
The cleric made the assertion at the Catholic Sacred Heart Cathedral in Warri during the Lent mass organized by the church.
Afareha, who lamented the high rate of corruption and hatred, self-centredness and greed in the country, stated that this was not what God expects of us.
“Nigerians, no matter where they are, no matter who they are, whether they are politicians, governors, managers or directors, businessmen, workers, they must love one another, be more charitable to one another, regard the other person as the image and likeness of God like yourself and there will be peace.
“Where we don’t like the other person as ourselves, where there is corruption, there is greed and I alone not him, that is not what God want us to be”, he said.
Afareha also enjoined Nigerians to repent from their wickedness and believe the gospel of Jesus Christ stressing that, “the forty days of Lent is a period of genuine repentance and newness of life.”
Afareha explained that repentance was not in the clothes one puts but to believe in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ and be saved.
“Jesus has said it. Love your neighbour as yourself. Whether you are in goverment, whether you are in the army, whether you are in the ministry, Jesus has said it. Love your neigjbour as you love yourself. God who created him, created you, created me. If we love ourselves, we will become more like God. And God is peace; love and there will be unity, progress.”
