It’s a well-known fact that diet plays an important role in how long you will live for and that the extraordinarily long lives of people in some regions of the world can be put down to what they eat. These areas of the world, identified as “Blue Zones” by the National Geographic explorer Dan Buettner are spread across the globe from Italy to Japan and there is even a “Blue Zone” in the United States. If you have wondered what you need to put on your plate to be able to live a long and healthy life, here is what longest-living people in the world eat.
1. Goats milk
The shepherds of Sardinia in Italy are quite likely to see their 100 th birthday. Their diet is mainly a plant based one but, one other thing that does stand out, is that they consume a lot of sheep’s cheese and goat’s milk. They complement this with only a moderate amount of carbohydrates, along with plenty of fava beans, tomatoes and chickpeas.
Eggs often feature in the diets of people who live to a long age and that’s not at all surprising, given all the beneficial nutrients that they contain. Eggs are a rich source of protein and they also contain choline and the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin. As well as providing protein, the choline in eggs is thought to be able to help with maintaining a good memory in old age.
3. Fresh fruit and vegetables
One of the, so called, “Blue Zones” can be found in Loma Linda, California, where members of the Seventh-day Adventist community who reside there can expect to live beyond 100 years old. They follow a mainly vegetarian diet that contains lots of grains, nuts and vegetables. They also avoid eating any sugars that are not 100% natural.
Another of the foods that many people say are good for you is apples. Apples do have many health benefits that could help you live longer. They are high in soluble fibre and they contain one of the most powerful antioxidants, quercetin. Eating an apple a day will lower blood cholesterol, fight blood clots and it will help to prevent cancer too.
The people of Okinawa, Japan have some of the longest lifespans in the world and they eat a diet that is high in fish. Their diet includes a serving of fish, three times a week, and they also eat a lot of wholegrains, vegetables, and seaweed. Studies have shown that the people of Okinawa are far less likely to develop cancer than people in other regions of the world and this is put down to their extremely healthy diet.
6. Soy products
Soy products, like tofu, feature in many of the diets of people who live a long life, including the people of Okinawa. Soy is well-known for its ability to decrease the bad cholesterol in the blood and lowering blood pressure. That can have a major positive effect on life expectancy because it will help to avoid strokes and heart disease.
7. Olive oil
On the Geek island of Ikaria, living to 90 years old is nothing special, and living to 100 is commonplace. The people here eat mainly vegetables, which they have grown in their own gardens and they use olive oil extensively in their cooking. The island has the highest proportion of people in their 90s, anywhere in the world and much lower rates of cancer or heart disease, than most places as well.
8. Red wine
The debate as to whether or not drinking alcohol can extend your life is still not settled for sure, but there is no doubt that a lot of people who have lived into their 100s do claim that moderate alcohol consumption has helped reach that age. Red wine, in particular, is known to contain resveratrol and catechins, which can lower cholesterol and help to prevent cancer.
Avocados are one of the healthiest foods on the planet and longest-living people love eating them; avocados contain a whole list of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and healthy fats. They help fight high blood pressure, certain types of cancer, and they help to prevent heart disease too.
Despite that fact that they don’t spend a lot of money on health care, the people of Nicoya, a peninsula of Costa Rica, enjoy lifespans well over the average for the rest of the world. Their diet is very rich in beans and tropical fruits like yams and papayas. They also drink water that is very high in magnesium and calcium, which keeps their bones strong and healthy and wards off heart disease.
